OpenAI and Nvidia have entered formal partnerships with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance cooperation on artificial intelligence and computing projects. These agreements are part of a national initiative to integrate cutting-edge AI with the computational power of U.S. national laboratories. The arrangements support the Genesis Mission, a program created through an executive order aimed at accelerating American scientific research, energy development, and national security efforts.

The Genesis Mission is inspired by the Apollo program and seeks to merge AI technologies with the supercomputing capacity found at DOE laboratories. The DOE is tasked with creating a unified AI platform that will allow powerful computers and large datasets to automate experiment design, speed up simulations, and develop predictive models. The project requires cooperation with agencies including the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the National Institutes of Health.

OpenAI has previously worked with DOE labs, deploying its AI models for scientific research and collaborating on complex problems. It has utilized the Venado supercomputer at Los Alamos National Laboratory and organized large-scale events involving researchers from multiple labs. Kevin Weil, vice president of OpenAI for Science, stated that this work allows for faster exploration of ideas and quicker movement from insight to validated results.

Nvidia announced it will expand its role as an industry partner in the effort. The company has partnered with Oracle to build the DOE’s largest scientific research supercomputer at Argonne National Laboratory and plans to support additional computing infrastructure at both Argonne and Los Alamos.

The initiative reflects a broader U.S. effort to collaborate with private industry leaders—such as Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Advanced Micro Devices—to further increase supercomputing resources.

On the market side, sentiment among retail investors was reported as bearish for both OpenAI and Nvidia, with higher message volume for OpenAI and lower for Nvidia. Nvidia’s stock has gained 30% so far in 2025.
